Actress Tilda Swinton has played down her spat with American movie director Quentin Tarantino, following his criticism of the British movie industry.

Speaking at the CANNES FILM INDUSTRY last week (ends14MAY04), the Pulp FICTION film-maker stated the British film industry was unsustainable, and everyone who gained success in the country immediately left.

Swinton hit back, saying the diversity of the British film industry must be protected from the proliferation of Hollywood productions.

However, the celebrated actress - who is on the Cannes critical jury with Tarantino - has denied claims she has had a personal disagreement with the director.

She says, "We get on fine. Quentin's so passionate about his film which can only be good."
