Actor Thomas Dekker drew heavily on his personal trauma for inspiration as he shot new drama Angels Crest - his father was dying as he portrayed a heartbroken dad on film.
The former Heroes star plays Ethan, a young father whose son dies after a tragic turn of events, in the movie, which also features Jeremy Piven and Mira Sorvino.
Dekker, 23, admits he didn't have to look far to convey the deep emotion he was already experiencing as his own parent was losing his life.
But the actor forced himself to separate his personal and professional lives so his own grieving process wasn't played out completely onscreen.

Actor Thomas Dekker has addressed persistent rumours about his sexuality, insisting he's open to the possibility of a same-sex relationship.
Dekker has long been dogged by speculation he's gay, and now the My Sister's Keeper star admits he never says never when it comes to romance.
He tells Out magazine, "I've only really had relationships with women, but I'm certainly not closed to it. If there are possibilities of being able to do anything in life, why would you say you would never take any up?
"In the later chunk of my teen years I was so all over the place with sex. It was terrible. I never really had a real relationship at all. During puberty, it's all about sex, and it's all about figuring yourself out. I think I overdid it when I was younger."

Actor Thomas Dekker was left fuming when TV bosses failed to inform him his Heroes character was gay - because he had been playing a straight teen for so long.
Dekker was cast in the sci-fi series as Zach, a geeky student with a crush on Hayden Panettiere's cheerleader character, a role he portrayed in a dozen episodes before reading a script in which he reveals he's gay.
Dekker admits he would have jumped at the chance to play a gay "pioneer" and was upset that he only learned about Zach's sexuality just hours before he was due to shoot a prom scene with Panettiere
He tells Out magazine, "I went through the f**king roof! If you're going to have a gay character on your show come out and be a pioneer for kids, I would've liked to play that from the get-go from my perspective. I went to set and said to the writers, 'I really wish that it wouldn't have been five hours before I come into work that I get this news that (the character) I'd been playing for the last 12 episodes knows and is comfortable with the fact that he is gay. Because I would've played this very differently.'
