Bad Boys II Review

Good
It would be a hard heart indeed that couldn't find a bit of affection for a movie that starts with two black police officers going undercover at a Klan rally and ends with what appears to be an invasion of Cuba. That movie, Bad Boys II, which comes raging into summertime theaters still woozy from weak, watery sequels (Charles Angels 2 and Legally Blonde 2, among countless others), arrives a mere 8 years after the first one and is very eager to make up for lost time - a little too eager, in fact.

The first Bad Boys shouldn't have been any good at all, but ended up a huge hit that remade the careers of just about everyone involved. It was directed by a guy known only for commercials (Michael Bay), produced by a team (Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson) desperate for a hit, and starring two sitcom actors (Martin Lawrence and Will Smith) with no proven movie clout. Somehow, it all came together into a near classic, with lovingly choreographed explosions and Lawrence and Smith doing hilarious, improvised riffs over the by-the-numbers script.

King Of New York Review

OK
King of New York, a violent story of one gangster who shoots, stabs, and beats his way to the top of the local crime scene, has never had the street cred of Scarface, despite the similar themes.

And though Artisan is issuing a two-disc DVD release of the film, don't expect it to find much more of a cult audience 14 years after its original release.

Bad Boys Review

Good
Competent yet asinine, Bad Boys teams Will Smith and Martin Lawrence as an Odd Couple-ish pair of cops. Will helps Martin get his groove back while the duo fight crime. Typical Bruckheimer fare with explosions a-plenty, though less vapid than usual, mainly because Smith lends an air of credibility to the whole thing that Lawrence tries -- in every scene -- to destroy.

Space Jam Review

Bad
As a teenager, when I was rabid New York Knicks fan, I hated Michael Jordan. I hated how smug he was on the court. I hated how he always hit the big shot. I hated his commercials. I hated his Chicago Bulls teammates and his Zen-poseur coach, Phil Jackson. I hated the obnoxious bandwagon fans he created (second only to ignorant, win-happy, tradition oblivious, fair weather Yankee fans), as well as the wannabe playground showboaters he inspired.

That being said, I am probably not the most impartial person to watch Space Jam, the 1996 outing in which Jordan helps the beloved Looney Tunes gang compete in an interplanetary basketball game. However, any die-hard Bulls fan can agree with any Knicks fan on this one fact: Jordan is a terrible actor

Bad Boys II Review

OK

Moderation has never been a high priority for the explosion-infatuated team of producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Michael Bay, but with the two-and-a-half hour wise-cracking, car-crashing, ammo-clip-emptying action sequel "Bad Boys II," they demonstrate what could almost be described as a talent for not knowing enough to quit while they're ahead.

Around the two hour mark, as nattering Miami cops Mike Lowry (Will Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) are gearing up for their umpteenth shootout, the flick simply runs out of steam. It's not that fireballs and gunfights drop off, it's that the accumulative effect becomes a mind-numbing din of million-dollar-a-minute over-production.

A sequel to 1995's barrage-of-bullets buddy-cop guilty pleasure that made household names of Smith and Lawrence -- and unleashed on the world a deluge of Bay's uber-slick, brain-dead blockbusters ("The Rock," "Armageddon," "Pearl Harbor") -- the flick is a 100-mph joy ride until it hits the skids.
