The Return Of The King (1980) Review

Good
So the story goes that, despite being generally bad, fans were clamoring for more Lord of the Rings, as Ralph Bakshi refused to do any more movies. Warner Brothers came to the "rescue" with this TV special, which recaps the beginning of the books, then finishes off the story of Return of the King, the last book in the trilogy.

The animation is typical of the early 1980s, round faces and bulbous noses, wide expressions, and oversized eyes. And lots of singing: "Where there's a whip, there's a way" is a guilty pleasure classic.

I Want To Live! Review

Good
You know the end of The Player? When Julia Roberts sits in the gas chamber and Bruce Willis rushes in to save her? Altman is making fun of I Want to Live!, in part at least, a film in which Susan Hayward overacts so superbly en route to execution that they couldn't help but give her an Oscar. Hayward is, in reality, nothing short of a ridiculous ham in this movie, which makes it perfect for anyone who wants their TV to shrilly scream at them for two hours. Based on the grim true story of Barbara Graham, executed at San Quentin in 1953.

I Bury The Living Review

Excellent
Really creepy but very short Twilightish tale of a cemetary proprietor who finds his placing of black pins in the wall map of grave plots leads to the death of the plot's owner. Then he finds if he puts a white pin in where a black one was... Very well photographed in stark black and white, reminscent of Night of the Living Dead, only without, you know, the zombies. Interesting camera tricks alone are worth a look. Very underrated.

Shadow Conspiracy Review

Bad
Enemy of the State, The Manchurian Candidate, The Fugitive... which of these movies is Shadow Conspiracy not trying to be? Despite an all-star cast, this rotten flick came and went in the blink of an eye, with Charlie Sheen trying to uncover a (gasp!) plot to kill the president. The story's driven completely by coincidence and baffling lunacy, and you'll be driven... to press eject on your VCR.
