Sixties teen icon RAY PETERSON has died at his home in Smyrna, Tennessee, after losing a lengthy battle with cancer.

The TELL LAURA I LOVE HER singer, who was dubbed `the golden voice of rock `n' roll,' was 65.

The singer also recorded another rock `n' roll ballad, The Wonder Of You, in 1959. The song was later covered by Elvis Presley.

Peterson ended his pop career in the mid-1960s after touring the world with the Beach Boys on their SUMMER SAFARI tour.

The singer's life started and ended with illness - as a boy growing up in Texas, he fought polio.

He used his recovery to fine tune his singing voice and started performing at clubs and bars upon his release from hospital. As a teenager he relocated to Los Angeles, where he signed to RCA in 1958.

As well as The Wonder of You and Tell Laura I Love Her, Peterson also had hits with ANSWER ME and CORRINA CORRINA.
