The boozy singer has confessed he often sees dead people - and they dictate lyrics and song ideas to him.
He tells TheQuietus, "I've seen ghosts behind me in period costume dictating songs on a couple of occasions."
And he tells the website a spook actually came up with the lyrics for 1991 single A Rainy Night In Soho, adding, "I had no idea what it was about. I had a vague idea by the time I got to the fourth verse but until then I hadn't got a clue what was going on."
Fairytale of New York, MACGowan's duet with the late Kirsty MACColl, is British bookmakers' favourite to land the coveted U.K. Christmas number one single this year (12).
The Pogues are re-releasing the track to mark its 25th anniversary.
It's not clear if one of MACGowan's ghost pals helped him write the classic festive tune.
