James Cameron has disclosed that 20th Century Fox plans to rerelease Avatar in August with an additional six minutes of special-effects scenes. Cameron told the website HeroComplex.com that he believes the film would have continued to draw big crowds for many more weeks if it were not for the limited number of 3D screens. "We were sold out of our IMAX performances right up to the moment until they were contractually obligated to switch to Alice in Wonderland, so we know we left money on the table there." He offered no specific date for the rerelease and indicated that all depends on being able to grab sufficient 3D screens. "We're going to wait until there's a time to come back in, inject the new footage into the mix and see if we can interest people in the Avatar experience in theaters." By then, they will already have been able to watch it at home on DVD and Blu-ray. However, Cameron said, "I think Avatar is kind of a unique category where people are enjoying the unique theatrical experience even though they may have seen it on the small screen. They want to have that immersive, transportive experience." Speaking about his planned sequel to Avatar , Cameron insisted that his goal "is to do what we did before at half the price." ( Avatar is widely regarded as the most expensive film ever produced.). However, he quickly added, "We won't accomplish that, but if we can reduce by 25 percent ... we'll have really accomplished something." Cameron also disclosed that the planned sequel will set up the premise for a third film. "I'm going to be focusing on the ocean on Pandora, which will be equally rich and diverse and crazy and imaginative, but it just won't be a rain forest."
