With Despicable Me 2 tracking strongly among moviegoers -- analysts are predicting it could earn as much as $110-115 million by Sunday -- and with strong holdover competition, The Lone Ranger could wind up with as little as $65-70 million over the five-day Fourth of July holiday, according to some forecasts. Universal's animated film is receiving mixed initial reviews even from individual critics. Stephen Holden in The New York Times, for example says that it is consistently diverting and so cute you'll want to pet it. Yet it is also weightless and lacks a center. Peter Debruge in Variety remarks that the sequel is endearing if slightly less inspired than the original. And Michael Rechtshaffen writes in the Hollywood Reporter that while the movie lacks the inspired Spark of its predecessor, there's still plenty to enjoy here, thanks, he writes to an irresistible Looney Tunes-style nuttiness that makes up for the absence of a more substantial plotline.
