Australian film critic Simon Weaving has predicted that lesbians will soon become the new vampires at the box office. As reported by today's (Thursday) Sydney Morning Herald, Weaving, the brother of actor Hugo Weaving (The Matrix, Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit), commented following the announcement that Cate Blanchett and Mia Wasikowska will play lovers in the lesbian drama Carol, to be directed by Todd Haynes. On Sunday, another drama featuring lesbian characters, Blue Is the Warmest Color, was awarded the Palme d'Or, the highest prize at the Cannes Film Festival. When a theme becomes popular it's likely that Hollywood picks up on it and runs with it. Just like the spate of films ... about zombies and vampires, Weaving said. Noting that Harvey Weinstein bought U.S. distribution rights to Carol during the festival, Weaving said, You can guarantee than when Harvey signs up to something he is thinking in dollar signs.
