2012 Australian Music Prize winners The Jezabels released their new single 'City Girl' on May 14th 2012 on Play It Again Sam Recordings (Editors, Seasick Steve, Soap & Skin, Zulu Winter). The single is taken from their debut album 'Prisoner' which went straight into the Australian charts at number two. Their popularity seems to be spreading overseas as they hit the UK for tours and festivals.
The track is a morose, guitar/pop song with a slow and symbolic video to match. The video features a lost looking female and a mysterious man in a window - an interesting depiction of a very clear story regarding the 'City Girl'. Hayley Mary's distinctive voice sends a tumult of emotion through the track along with melodious keyboard playing from Heather Shannon.
The band (who are guitarist Sam Lockwood, drummer Nik Kaloper, keyboardist Heather Shannon and singer Hayley Mary) have played to around 2300 in just three months at their sell-out London shows of which they headlined. They will play to a further 1500 tonight at London's Brixton Electric.
They are also set to hit Liverpool and Dublin, with more UK tour dates and festival dates yet to be announced. The Jezabels are definitely one to keep an eye on this summer.
