Animated superhero adventure The Incredibles has lived up to its name, after topping the American box office with a debut haul of $70.7 million (GBP39.2 million).

The movie, featuring the voices of Holly Hunter and Samuel L Jackson, now holds the record as having the second-best opening weekend for an animated film, after Shrek 2's $108 million (GBP60 million) box office count.

Sarah Michelle Gellar's thriller The Grudge, which was number one the previous two weekends, slipped to third place with $13.5 million (GBP7.5 million), behind Jamie Foxx's Ray Charles biopic RAY, which remained number two for a second straight weekend with $13.8 million (GBP7.6 million).

British actor Jude Law's remake of the 1960s hit Alfie, performed weakly at the box office, debuting with just $6.5 million (GBP3.6 million) to take fifth position.
