Review of The Gaslight Anthem's single The 59 Sound.
Having caused an underground for the last 18 months or so, 2009 seems to be the year that New Jersey quartet The Gaslight Anthem break through. Scheduled to appear at pretty much any festival you can name - Glastonbury, Reading/Leeds, T In The Park, Lollapalooza, Fuji Rock to name but a few - they're quite clearly intent on getting noticed.
The title track from their second album which was released last year, 'The '59 Sound' is an enthusiastic blend of old-school flavour punk and more modern emo-rock. From the thunderous drums through screeching guitars and Brian Fallon's nostalgic vocals, it's hard to not get carried by the energy that seeps through and be hugely impressed.
