Review of Hunger Sauce EP by The Family Rain

Having started out their musical lives in a metal band, brothers William, Ollie and Timothy Walter jettisoned their sound (and a band member) before settling as The Family Rain. Their debut album 'Under The Volcano' was released earlier in the year and the band have supported an impressive array of acts, including The Courteeners, Thirty Seconds To Mars and The Rolling Stones.

The Family Rain Hunger Sauce EP

That none of the four tracks on this EP run beyond the three minute mark should tell you that The Family Rain are not ones for drawing out a song unnecessarily.  'You Should Be Glad You've Got A Man' is the sound of The Killers trying garage rock in a direct and frantic manner - and succeeding gracefully.  Reducing the tempo, 'We Are In Love' builds around a simple riff into a passable track, but is something of a disappointment given its predecessor.  Stepping towards funk, 'Tarantula' swaggers with infectious confidence, while 'Punch Bowl' is reminiscent of Jack White's various projects with some splintering guitar work. It rounds off a varied sampler of a band who remain listenable throughout, though the heights of the opening number are not re-visited.
