The Envy Corps
The Envy Corps' new single 'Rhinemaidens', released on October 8th, is taken from the band's debut album, 'Dwell', which is itself set for release in January 2008. The band, now settled in the glamorous confines of Streatham, will continue their hectic touring schedule through to the new year in support of it.
Written in the shower (really!) by vocalist Luke Pettipoole, 'Rhinemaidens' is built around a surging riff with Luke's vocals building into anthemic melodies, displaying The Envy Corps' cunning way of ignoring a traditional song structure to produce their own unique sound. As with the album, the listener is, right from the start, in for an epic ride that demands attention and on repeated plays reveals new magic every time.
The album, 'Dwell', was produced entirely by the band and includes 'Story Problem' which was the bands limited edition single in March this year. That song features as a track in this week's #1 movie, 'Run, Fatboy, Run', which stars Simon Pegg, Dylan Moran and Thandie Newton and was written and directed by David Schwimmer.
The Envy Corps are Luke Pettipoole (vocals/guitar/piano), David Yoshimura (bass), Scott Yoshimura (drums) and the aforementioned Darner (guitar). Luke and David founded the band in the Midwestern town of Ames, Iowa, various personnel changes eventually led to the group that stands before you now, with David's brother Scott joining the fold on drums and finally the addition of Brandon.
Assembling what little equipment they had, The Envy Corps got creative, recording piano in the servant's quarters of a rural farmstead and sneaking into the local church to track drums in a suitably reverberative sanctuary. The songs that resulted - those of a self-proclaimed 'band from Iowa that sounds like they're from Missouri' - reached swiftly-smitten ears and, via #1 fan (and fellow Iowan Dave Keuning (The Killers) found their way to Vertigo Records who wasted no time in signing the band.
