Rock sensations The Darkness have been unmasked as childhood nerds who were "rather quiet" by a teacher who knew then as youngsters.

High-pitched catsuit-wearing frontman Justin Hawkins and guitarist brother DAN were just seven and six respectively when they attended Yoxford Primary School in Darsham, Suffolk, Britain.

And while their interest in music was always clear, head teacher PETER SCUFFIL insists the well-behaved boys he knew gave no sign of the all-conquering Spandex rock phenomenon they would eventually become.

He says, "I liked them. Justin was rather quiet and it was his musical ability that shone. He was an all-round good pupil, artistically gifted and a most excellent drawer, as was Daniel. They both had a sophisticated sense of humour, too."
