Broadway hit The Color Purple has shattered New York City box office house records after grossing $1.1 million (GBP611,000) in a week. The stage musical adaptation of Steven Spielberg's acclaimed 1985 movie made history for the week ending 18 June (06), according to broadwayworld.com, and then trumped itself by scoring $1.12 million (GBP622,200) and $1.34 million (GBP744,400) in successive weeks. The tally beats the existing house record ($1.01 million/GBP561,100), held by LA BOHEME. The musical has been one of the top five grossing shows on Broadway since it opened at the end of last year (NOV05). It's record-breaking business could not have come at a better time - The Color Purple celebrated its 250th performance on Saturday evening (08JUL06).
