Superhero blockbuster The Avengers has become the latest movie to make the ultra-exclusive $1 billion box office club.
The Marvel epic, which stars Robert Downey, Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth and Scarlett Johannson, raked in a whopping $103.2 million (£64.5 million) in the American market over the weekend (11-13May12), pushing the film's worldwide haul to just over $1.1 billion.
The action movie, which opened around the world at the end of April (12) and on 4 May (12) in North America, becomes only the 10th film to break $1 billion at the box office.
The other projects to accomplish the same money milestone are Titanic, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, The Dark Knight, Avatar, Alice in Wonderland, Toy Story 3, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and most recently Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.
