The superhero stars of The Avengers have fought off competition from American Reunion to top the U.K. box office for the second week running.
The star-studded blockbuster, titled Avengers Assemble in Britain, features a high-profile ensemble cast including Robert Downey, Jr., Scarlett Johansson and Mark Ruffalo as the famed comic book team and it brought in $13 million (£8 million) over the weekend (05-06May12).
The takings left the American Pie sequel trailing in second place with $10 million (£6.3 million) ahead of Zac Efron's romantic drama The Lucky One, which debuted third in the chart, earning $1.7 million (£1.1 million).
Disney's re-released Beauty and the Beast 3D was another new entry in fourth spot ($1.1 million/£685,000) and Jason Statham's latest action film Safe rounded out the top five after taking just over £1 million (£670,000).
