The Assassination of Richard Nixon director Niels Mueller has slammed the American independent movie scene for its over reliance on Hollywood studios.

Mueller refuses to believe any movie can be truly independent if it accepts financial backing from a major studio.

He tells British magazine HOTDOG, "There's talk about the 'Independent Spirit', but when there's large indie companies owned by the major studios, there'll always be material they won't touch because they've got shareholders.

"Relevance often has an inverse relationship with profit in Hollywood, and you shouldn't ever confuse that with real independent film-making."
