Terrence Howard allegedly attacked his ex-wife during an argument.
The 44-year-old star is being accused of physically assaulting Michelle Ghent - who he split from in May 2013 after three years of marriage - while they were on holiday in Costa Rica, with a number of other family members.
According to TMZ.com's sources Michelle claims Terrence beat her up, while he claims she maced him, one of his daughters and another family member, before police were called and reports were taken.
Others think the actor made up the mace story to cover the brutality of the events which occurred.
Michelle appears to be planning to file a restraining order against her ex-husband.
The pair have previously raised suspicion about their domestic affairs.
In 2011 Michelle accused Terrence of being violent with her during their marriage, alleging that he assaulted her several times over the course of a year but the actor denied these allegations.
Terrance was married to Lori McCommas for 14 years and they have three children, daughters Aubrey and Heaven, and a son Hunter.
They re-married in 2005 before splitting for good in 2007.
He then wed Michelle in a secret ceremony in January 2010 and she filed for divorce in February 2011.
