If proof were still needed (and it really shouldn’t be) that Taylor Swift is an artist who thrives on heartbreak, then last night’s performance that saw her open up the 2013 Grammy Awards should’ve provided all the evidence required.

Swift opened the show in grand style, performing the latest of her break-up smash hit break up anthems ‘We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together’, and she couldn’t resist taking what appeared to be a sly dig at her most recent ex, One Direction’s Harry Styles. Performing in a white suit and top hat ensemble, complete with a three-ring circus behind her, Swift teasingly switched her vocal to sing in a British accent and changed the lyrics of her song to say “I’m sorry I’m busy opening up the Grammys—and we’re never getting back together.” To be fair Harry Styles has never really seemed like the sort of bloke to care to have much of a bother with moving on from ex-girlfriends – he’s certainly racked up enough of them already – but this was a finely placed dig by Swift, who also had the joy of another high-profile ex, John Mayer, in the crowd.

Though Swift took the attention initially, the night soon became all about British group the Mumford & Sons – who took the much-coveted album of the year award – and The Black Keys, who took four wins themselves.
