Taylor Schilling had a ''painful'' time at school.

The 'Orange is the New Black' actress was singled out by her classmates because of her appearance and admits she found growing up ''tough''.

She said: It was tough at home, and it was tough at school... And my experience was painful, so painful. There was a period of time I had very short hair, and I had glasses, and I was very tall for my age.''

These days, the 29-year-old star is more comfortable with herself, and is happy not to feel ''bound'' by her appearance and thinks she has better things to ''offer the world'' than her looks.

She said: ''I don't feel bound by my face or my body. I don't feel like that's the biggest gift I have to offer the world. I feel like there are more parts of me to offer than that.''

Taylor plays incarcerated Piper Chapman in 'Orange is the New Black' and finds the role ''liberating'' because she wears a prison-issue orange jumpsuit for most of her scenes.

She explained to the new edition of Allure magazine: ''It's totally liberating. There's freedom in not having to make it about how my jeans fit or what my boobs look like in a top. All I have to do now is play.''
