Have A Go Hero: Taye Diggs Captures Burglar At Home After SAG Awards

Taye Diggs

Taye Diggs had an eventful night on Sunday (January 27, 2013) and not just because he attended the Screen Actors Guild Awards. The Private Practise star found himself playing the hero when he returned home from the awards ceremony, where he had been presenting, when he found an intruder at his Los Angeles abode.

Diggs returned home to find the 20 year old man, Hassan Omar Juma in the garage on his property and according to Fox News, chased the man, catching him and detaining him. When the police arrived, Juma was arrested and reportedly charged with first-degree felony residential burglary. He has now been jailed, in lieu of $50,000 bail. Hassan Omar Juma faces trial this afternoon (January 30, 2013) in a Los Angeles courtroom. If he is convicted, he faces up to six years in prison.

Taye gave no indication of the drama that had unfolded at his home, on his Twitter page. Before he headed to the awards ceremony, he shared his excitement with his followers, saying “Yup. Headed to the SAG awards w the lovely ‪@idinamenzel. Presenting w ‪@busyphillips. These things can be so much fun...” and later on, he said how much fun he’d had: “Dee felt bloated, but I had a blast. My favorite part is the dance party afterwards. Dj Paesche kills it and everyone's on the dance floor.”

Brown Sugar Review

Weak
To completely understand Brown Sugar requires an appreciation of what hip-hop means to the lives of those who listen to it. Since I'm not well versed in hip-hop music and culture, I didn't understand some parts of the film that the majority of my audience clearly did. I can, however, recognize good filmmaking when I see it. And unfortunately, Brown Sugar is not sweet enough to liven up its predictable story and will leave even fans of hip-hop sorely disappointed.

The film's setup is simple. Dre (Taye Diggs) and Sidney (Sanaa Lathan) have been very close friends since childhood, when hip-hop was just coming into its own. Dre is a well-known hip-hop record producer who is unhappy with his job and is about to get married. Sidney is a magazine editor who is working on a book about the origins of hip-hop and cannot find the right man to fit her groove. She is of course secretly in love with Dre because he is the only man who can connect with her and her music, and Dre is secretly in love with Sidney because she is the only woman who will support his dreams. Both Dre and Sidney have problems with the other's initial choice of spouse (Nicole Ari Parker and Boris Kodjoe).

The Best Man (1999) Review

Very Good
The best text for a film to toy with the "emotional heartstrings" of an audience is undoubtedly the romantic comedy. Broad in its appeal, the filmmaker doesn't have to worry about turning away certain audiences with horror, overblown special effects, or too much action. Romantic comedies are so successful because they parody our fascination with love and all its complexities. They are like rolling along a roller coaster of emotion, poking fun at our society's mores, twisting and turning towards a morally fulfilling conclusion. It's a Catch-22 -- despite the fact that we know what's going to happen in the end, we keep coming back for more, and are continuously intrigued time and again by the molding of a blissful resolution.

The Best Man, directed and written by Malcom Lee, is a prime example of an exhilarating love story that will certainly charm its audience. Well written and fabulously acted, this film hopefully will put some fresh new faces onto the Hollywood scene.

New Best Friend Review

Terrible
If the people behind the Girls Gone Wild videos were ever to develop a movie, New Best Friend would be it. Beautiful women grind on each other, share long, lingering kisses and (un)dress like they're preparing for a Maxim cover shoot.

Not a single shred of thought was invested in making this movie. There's not one sympathetic character or interesting thought to be found. If half the budget were actually spent on belly shirts and hair gel, I wouldn't be shocked.

Brown Sugar Review

Good

Both a winning, friends-or-more romance with intelligent, down-to-earth characters and a melodious love-letter to the heart and soul of hip-hop, "Brown Sugar" signals director Rick Famuyiwa's emergence as an articulate, grown-up voice in African-American (and cross-over) cinema.

Far more mature and perceptive than recent stereotype-hocking, battle-of-the-sexes "comedies" like "The Brothers" and "Two Can Play That Game," this movie may not have a terribly original plot -- in the midst of plans to marry other people, two life-long best friends (Taye Diggs and Sanaa Lathan) finally realize they're meant for each other -- but the story is built around smart, appealing, multi-dimensional characters whose romantic (and other) problems are not simplistic or easily resolved.

The supernaturally handsome and magnetic Diggs plays Dre, an executive at a record label that has sold its soul for commercial success. Torn between making a good living and sticking to his principles (defined by his true love of unadulterated, old-school hip-hop), he finally walks out when his boss tells him "You wanna keep it real, you go to (another label). You wanna keep it profitable, that's what we do." (A running gag features the label's talentless new black-and-white novelty rap duo who call themselves "the dalmatians of hip-hop" and plan to remake "The Girl Is Mine" as "The Ho is Mine.")

The Wood Review

Good

In its first five minutes "The Wood" looks likeit's going to be a breaking-the-fourth-wall disaster, as Omar Epps ("TheMod Squad") narrates to camera, explainingto the audience that it's two hours and ticking until his best buddy'snuptials and the groom is AWOL.

Epps is not a good narrator -- at least at first. He lookslike he missed a rehearsal and has been stuck reading cue cards.

But the day is saved with the entrance of Richard T. Jones("Event Horizon"), as another groomsman who helpsEpps find their cold-footed friend (Taye Diggs) and talk him back to thealter.
