Tarzan & Jane Review

Terrible
If you've seen Robert Smigel's "Bambi 2002" cartoon on Saturday Night Live, you pretty much know my feelings on direct-to-video Disney sequels. (The utterliy hilarious toon features a rapping Bambi, her injured-but-living mother, and a whole host of non-sequitur references to modern life.)

Tarzan & Jane isn't quite this commercially blatant, but there's not much to merit viewing this sequel to the popular Tarzan. The animation is rudimentary, the voices have all been replaced (the only notable one is Olivia d'Abo stepping in for Minnie Driver as Jane), and the soundtrack has returned to typical Disney orchestral music (though Phil Collins reprises a single song with Mandy Moore as accompaniment).

Rugrats Go Wild! Review

Terrible
You would have figured that with a show and movie series as delightfully cynical as Rugrats would have had the foresight to see that naming a movie with "Go Wild" in the title is just asking for insult. The similarities between the "Wild" movies go beyond the titles. Both take place in exotic getaway spots (a deserted island / a deserted alley outside a cheap New Orleans bar in Mardi Gras). Both involve a large cast of characters whose names you don't remember and whose voice you can barely make out through the sucking, slurping, or slurring of something or another. Oh yeah, and both are an utter waste of time unless your mind can't discern between binki-ness and kinkiness.

As if your kid will care, Rugrats Go Wild! is a cross between the shows Rugrats and The Wild Thornberrys, in which a Rugrats family vacation leads to being stranded on a deserted island. The only other inhabitants are the Thornberrys, a dysfunctional set of explorers with a souped-up RV that makes the new Lexus SUVs look like bumper cars. The adults get the idea to start going Lord of the Flies. The babies get the idea to start going exploring, and I get the idea to leave the theatre before dealing with an extra hour and a half of wasted time.

The Powerpuff Girls Movie Review

Weak

Successfully super-sized but otherwise no different from an episode of its TV inspiration, "The Powerpuff Girls Movie" is a wait-for-video flick if there ever was one.

Don't get me wrong -- I'm a huge fan of "The Powerpuff Girls." I'm such a huge fan that my favorite Christmas present last year was a trio of stuffed Powerpuff Girls I got from my girlfriend. I keep them next to my bed. You got a problem with that?

But like most entries in the currently trendy TV-cartoons-stretched-to-feature-length-films genre, this movie doesn't do much to justify its big screen status.

Spirited Away Review

Weak

Maybe I just don't "get" anime. I've been trying for years, and several movies from this often-mythological genre of Japanese animation have bowled me over: "The Ghost in the Shell," "Akira" and this year's "Metropolis," for starters. The enchanting, fantastic "Kiki's Delivery Service," by Hayao Miyazaki, the Steven Spielberg of anime, is a particular favorite of mine.

But while all my fellow film critics seem to think Miyazaki's new film, "Spirited Away," is one of his very best, the fable-istic story of a little girl trapped in a parallel world of spirits left me unaffected and completely indifferent.

The picture begins with 10-year-old Chihiro (given the voice of Daveigh Chase -- Lilo in Disney's "Lilo and Stitch" -- for the film's American release) reluctantly following her curious, irresponsibly clueless parents into a hidden, abandoned building while looking for a back road to the new house they're just about to move in to.
