Veteran blues guitarist ETTA BAKER died in Fairfax, Virginia on Saturday (23SEP06). She was 93. Baker, who has suffered from heart problems in the past, passed away while visiting a daughter who had suffered a stroke. No official cause of death has been given, but her health had gradually been deteriorating over the last few years. She recorded with artists including Taj Mahal and in 1991 won a Folk Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment For The Arts, and was known for her rhythmic finger-picking on the guitar and was still performing in recent months. In November (06), blues rocker KENNY WAYNE SHEPHERD's new album, which features Baker's playing, is released. Baker raised nine children. Her daughter DARLENE DAVIS says, "She was a great mother and a tower of strength for the family. We always looked up to her."
