'The Expendables 3' Is Saved By Mel Gibson's Clever Conrad Stonebanks

Mel Gibson Sylvester Stallone Jason Statham

The Expendables 3 isn't great -but you knew that already. It's essentially Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham shooting people's heads off, so it can't be good, but one little piece of inspired casting has ensured the movie will be at least filed under guilty pleasure, rather than utter disaster.

In the team's third outing, Barney (Stallone) and Christmas (Statham) come head-to-head with Conrad Stonebanks (Mel Gibson) - the original founder of The Expendables who broke ranks and became a ruthless arms trader. In order to kill his former colleague, Barney must form a fresh team, recruiting individuals who are younger, faster and more tech-savvy.

SuperMensch: The Legend Of Shep Gordon Review

Excellent

For his lively film directing debut, Mike Myers (aka Austin Powers) traces the remarkable life of his friend, the almost too-likeable music manager Shep Gordon. A mensch is a really nice guy, and this film documents how Gordon has created a makeshift family of loyal friends around him, even though he's never had a proper family of his own. It's an engaging movie that reminds audiences that the most important thing in life is certainly not fame.

Shep Gordon came to Los Angeles as a young man and happened to stay in the same hotel where Joplin, Hendrix and Morrison were hanging out. Quickly getting involved in their blurry world of drugs and money, Shep won over everyone he met simply because of his integrity and generosity. As a manager, he lived the high-life with high-powered girlfriends like Sharon Stone (who introduced him to Buddhism) and a Playboy Playmate wife. He helped Groucho Marx sort out his finances, and worked with lifelong pal Alice Cooper to create Cooper's iconic on-stage persona. And he's still considered one of the best fix-it men in the business. His home in Maui is a bolt-hole for any of his celebrity buddies who are trying to escape the limelight.

The film is assembled with a snappy rhythm that catches a sense of Shep's fast-paced lifestyle. It's packed with great film clips, hilarious home movies and even a few re-enactments. But the best stories are told by the starry interviewees who clearly adore Shep and recount riotous backstage anecdotes about their experiences with him, as well as his larger-than-life personality and unstoppable libido. The most jaw-dropping story is about how he ramped up clean-cut Canadian singer Anne Murray's reputation and career by having her photographed with super-cool lothario Teddy Pendergrass. But with a life this high-flying, Shep has never found a life partner or had his own children. Although he has become a father figure to his ex-wife's kids, essentially raising them himself.

'Escape To Victory' Reboot Set To Capitalize On America's Huge World Cup Following

Michael Caine Sylvester Stallone Doug Liman

‘Escape to Victory’ – or simply ‘Victory’ in U.S – captured two emotive subjects for Americans: war and sport. And now a remake is set to do the same, as Americans take soccer in to their hearts like never before with the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

The original, starring Michael Caine and Sylvester Stallone, saw the Nazi's arrogance manifest in a Germany v P.O.W football match, with the controlling force assuming it had the game won – an opportunity to embarrass those they had living under horrible conditions.

Supermensch: The Legend Of Shep Gordon Trailer

Shep Gordon may not be as famous as some of the biggest celebrities in the world, but you can bet they count him among their closest friends. A popular Jewish music manager who took on the career after meeting Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix, Shep's first subject was shock rocker Alice Cooper in 1965. Since then, his Hollywood career has exploded having also worked alongside the likes of Pink Floyd, Luther Vandross, Blondie, Ann Murray and others. Not only that, but Shep instigated the breakthrough of celebrity chefs and also become close personal friends with the 14th Dalai Lama during his venture into Buddhism. Now, though, after a life of luxury and living other people's lives, this 'mensch' as his star friends call him (a Yiddish word essentially meaning 'a good person') is looking for a life of his own.

It's A Knockout! Everything You Need To Know About 'Rocky The Musical'

Sylvester Stallone

So, it sounds like Rocky The Musical is going to be pretty darn great, if the critics are anything to go by, anyway. The musical has been written by the original Rocky, Sylvester Stallone, and is based on the 1976 movie of the same name (obviously without ‘The Musical’ tagged on to the end).

sly stallone rocky the musical Sly Stallone at the opening night of Rocky The Musical on Broadway

The basic plot of the musical is the same of that in the original Oscar-winning movie. Set in Philadelphia it tells the story of Rocky Balboa, an amateur boxer who gets the once in a lifetime opportunity to compete for the title of heavyweight champion of the world. There’s also a bit of a love story thrown in, you know, to keep everyone happy.

Grudge Match Review

Good

It's a little annoying that this high-concept marketing project (Rocky vs Raging Bull!) is as entertaining as it is: we want to hate it, as tired actors are sending up their own faded images. But while the script never even tries to be something interesting, it at least gives the stars some engaging scenes to work with. And we can't help but cheer for them in the end.

The film stars with a bit of history (and digital trickery), as young bucks Henry "Razor" Sharp and Billy "The Kid" McDonnen (Stallone and De Niro) battle it out back in 1982. Local fans in Pittsburgh are divided between them and are hugely disappointed when, at the peak of their fame, Razor suddenly retires before a climactic rematch. Now some 30 years later, a young promoter (Hart) decides to finally get them back together in the ring. But this stirs up an old feud involving Kid's affair with Razor's wife Sally (Basinger), which resulted in a son BJ (Bernthal), who's now a father himself. Can these two men possibly work together to promote their epic grudge match?

Silly question. Of course they start off gruffly snarling at each other but eventually find the expected mutual respect. And that's about the extent of the acting required of these two iconic stars. Add some fast-talking comedy from Hart, veteran battiness from Arkin, steely femininity from Basinger and soulfulness from Bernthal and the film at least has a veneer of complexity. But aside from wondering whether the filmmakers will fudge the final match so no one loses (they don't), there isn't much to worry about.

Sylvester Stallone Reprising The Role Of Rocky Balboa In 'Creed' Spin-Off

Sylvester Stallone ROCKY BALBOA Michael B. Jordan Jonathan Ross

Sylvester Stallone has confirmed that he plans to reprise his iconic character, ROCKY BALBOA, for the spin-off film, 'Creed'. The movie focuses on the grandson of Rocky's famous friend and opponent, Apollo Creed, with 67-year-old Stallone revealing that he will play the courageous boxer as he trains and mentors the young Creed, played by Michael B. Jordan. This is not, however, 'Rocky VII', Stallone reveals.

Stallone, who both wrote and starred in all the six 'Rocky' movies, won three Academy Awards for the first movie. In an interview with Jonathan Ross on 11th January 2014's 'An Evening with Sylvester Stallone' at the London Palladium, he revealed: ''I'm supposed to be doing a film with Ryan Coogler, who did 'Fruitvale Station', called 'Creed'. It's very interesting because people think it would be 'Rocky VII' ... it's not, I have a supporting role. It will be great to take that character, who's actually not well, and pass on his knowledge while he still has time. I think it could be a great movie and a great challenge. It is going to happen.''

Sylvester Stallone And Robert De Niro - Grudge Match Video Interview

Video Interview with Sylvester Stallone And Robert De Niro

Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro talk about their new boxing movie 'Grudge Match' in an interview. They discuss the relationship between their characters and the process of training for the movie's big fight.

'The characters we play are people that were just born to be natural enemies', says Sylvester. 'They're antagonistic because they're envious of each other's talents.' On the training regime, Robert admits they didn't do a lot of training together. 'I started working with Sylvester's guy, Bob Sale, he's great... He came to New York and we would train as much as we could and [Stallone] would give the choreography to him and so we worked on it for a few months', he explains. 'We didn't really work together 'til we got [to New Orleans].'

Homefront Review

OK

With a powerhouse cast and an anaemic script, this violent revenge thriller never quite gets off the ground. It's watchable for the character detail, but resolutely refuses to make any logical sense as it charges through its corny plot. Fortunately the slick filmmaking and charismatic acting hold our attention, adding a hint of sophistication to the bluntly brutal story.

It's set in the Louisiana bayou, where former undercover agent Phil (Statham) is trying to have a quiet life with his young daughter (Vidovic). But the locals are wary of outsiders, and a schoolyard confrontation escalates into a feud between Phil and a resentful woman (Bosworth) who calls her gangster brother Gator (Franco) for help in getting even. Gator quickly discovers Phil's past, then enlists his trashy pal Sheryl (Ryder) to contact Phil's old enemies. But as these ruthless thugs descend on the bayou, they fail to take into consideration the fact that Phil has nearly super-human fighting skills.

There's plenty of possibility in this rather tired premise, but Stallone's boneheaded script never bothers to make things believable, skipping over key details and indulging in trite coincidences. Fleder manages to obscure this with his fluid, pacey direction, and the cast is unusually good for such a simplistic thriller. The charismatic Statham doesn't stretch himself much, occasionally attempting a bit of real acting in the father-daughter scenes (his romance with LeFevre's teacher is never developed). Bosworth and Ryder add some unpredictable edges to their stereotypical roles. And it's Franco who steals the film as an unusually thoughtful redneck thug. Although his moral quandary doesn't put off any of the nastiness.

'The Fifth Estate' Is Stinker Of The Year In Movie Flop List [Trailer]

Benedict Cumberbatch Sylvester Stallone Bill Condon

It's been a slippery slope for Bill Condon's The Fifth Estate: first Wikileaks founder Julian Assange denounced the movie, then critics refused to be convinced, it disappointed at the box office and now it has been slapped with a great big 'flop of the year' sticker, courtesy of Forbes.

Sadly, Even Cumberbatch Couldn't Rescue 'The Fifth Estate.'

The topical movie, covering the rise of news-leaking website Wikileaks and set in a thriller format, initially seemed to be a shoo-in for success with actor-of-the-moment Benedict Cumberbatch as Assange and the Oscar-winning Condon at the helm.

Escape Plan Review

Good

You know not to expect something deep and meaningful when a movie stars Stallone and Schwarzenegger, and indeed this is pretty much what we expect: a slick thriller that's utterly preposterous but not quite stupid. But the premise has a certain idiotic charm to it, and there are just enough clever touches to keep our brains engaged.

Stallone plays brilliant security expert Breslin, whose job entails being thrown into maximum-security prisons so he can find the weakness in the system. Clearly unbothered by being beaten and brutalised by guards and inmates, Breslin is backed up by a support crew (Ryan and Jackson) and his business partner (D'Onofrio) back in the office. But now the CIA wants Breslin to check out its new top-secret enemy combatant lock-down. To do this, Breslin must go off the grid. And when he realises that the evil warden Hobbes (Caviezel) isn't playing ball, he teams up with brilliant scientist inmate Rottmayer (Schwarzenegger) to, yes, plan an escape.

As the story develops we get the feeling that the screenwriters sat around thinking of ways they could make this prison increasingly impossible to believe. Indeed, one mid-film twist is so incredible that it actually makes us admire the writers' audacity. Arthouse director Halstrom gleefully indulges in all of this silliness, keeping the imagery sharp and cool while name-checking pretty much every cliche of both prison and heist movies. There's even a bit of political context in the way a private contractor is abusing the system to profit from the War on Terror.
