Super Furry Animals frontman Gruff Rhys has said he would be glad of the Mercury Music Prize money as he would be able to pay off his touring debts.

His side project NEON NEON is one of the acts that have been nominated for the £20,000 cash prize this year.

Gruff said he was "surprised and pleased" to receive the nomination for the band, reports the Daily Record.

"I made the record about two years ago but only finished it this year so it's a bit strange to think of it as a new album and I'm working on many other things now," he said.

"But touring is expensive so if we win I know where that money will go."

He also went on talk about actor and pal Rhys Ifans, who was in the original line-up of the SUPER FURRY ANIMALS and is now singing with his own band THE PETH.

"Rhys is a great singer and really enjoying it - he doesn't need to choose between acting and singing," he remarked.

The winner of the prize will be announced on September 4th.
