Wolverine Tame; Box Office Wild

Twentieth Century Fox's debut of The Wolverine brought in just $53.1 million domestically over the weekend, well below tracking projections, according to final figures released by the studio on Monday. That was 15 percent below the $62.1 million that The Dark Knight earned in its second weekend a year ago. Nevertheless, the overall box office was up 25 percent over the comparable week last year, thanks to solid performances by the rest of the movie slate, including Warner Bros.' The Conjuring which brought in $22.2 million in its second week and Universal's Despicable Me, which took in $16.4 million to finish in third in its fourth week. Films that ranked second through fifth this weekend took in a combined $63.9 million, while the similarly ranked films in 2012 took in a combined $45.2 million. As things now stand, the total box office for the year is down less than half a percentage point from last year's at this time -- $6.59 billion versus $6.62 billion -- despite getting off to a rocky start at the beginning of the year.
