Vivienne Westwood - Vivienne Westwood Backing Proposed European Environment Law
Legendary fashion designer Vivienne Westwood is calling on European citizens to back a proposed new law which would make environmental destruction a crime.
The style guru, a longtime environmentalist, is lending her voice to the End Ecocide in Europe initiative, which aims to make big business bosses liable for putting profits before nature.
Under European Union (E.U.) law, one million citizens must vote for a certain proposal before it is considered by leaders, and Westwood wants to gather as many signatures as possible before the 21 January (14) deadline.
She says, "Our financial rulers and the politicians who help them are playing a giant game of Monopoly with the world's finite resources - completely abstract from reality - even though they accept the facts of Climate Change. And yet, you can't play Monopoly when everybody's dead. They imagine they'll be the last people. They don't care so long as they win."
Westwood will hold a press conference aboard the ship HMS President on London's River Thames on Wednesday (15Jan14) to raise awareness of the campaign, and will present a film about the issue alongside End Ecocide in Europe director Prisca Merz.
Westwood took to the streets last August (13) as part of a protest against a proposed fracking drilling site in West Sussex, England.
