Javier Camarena - Tenor Javier Camarena Performs Rare Encore At Metropolitan Opera
Mexican tenor Javier Camarena has made history at New York's Metropolitan Opera by becoming only the third singer to ever be honoured with a rare encore.
The star was performing Don Ramiro in a revival of Rossini's La Cenerentola (Cinderella) production on Friday night (25Apr14), when he received a rousing reception from the audience.
The 38 year old was then invited back to the stage to sing an aria encore.
Bosses at the Met ruled out encores in the 1920s, but exceptions have previously been made for late opera legend Luciano Pavarotti in 1994 and celebrated singer Juan Diego Florez in 2008 and 2012.
Ironically, Camarena was filling in for Florez in Friday's La Cenerentola after the Peruvian tenor fell ill.
