Sting - Sting: 'Bbc Ambushed Me'
Rocker Sting has accused Bbc bosses of "ambushing" him during a notorious interview in which his band The Police was branded the least environmentally-friendly rockers in the world.
The Message in a Bottle hitmaker was taken to task by tough interviewer Jeremy Paxman on current affairs show Newsnight in 2006, when he blasted the singer as a rich rock star with an eco-harming lifestyle who simultaneously campaigns for the Amazon rainforest.
Before the singer appeared onscreen, producers ran a trailer describing The Police as the biggest-polluting band on the planet, and Sting has now revealed he was enraged by the incident and considered walking out before the interview began.
He tells British magazine Seven, "(It was an) ambush. I was here in New York, and I was listening to the film that they showed beforehand, and I thought, 'I could just leave an empty chair here'. When a Bbc producer says, 'We want you to come on and talk about the dam project you just visited,' then they lay on some c**p about The Police being the dirtiest band on the planet - I'm not quite sure where they got that from. I mean, who can say that? I should have said, 'What's your research?' It was bulls**t. It was tabloid journalism. I expected more of the Bbc."
