Sir Sean Connery - Sean Connery Backs Scottish Independence
Veteran actor Sir Sean Connery has voiced his support for Scottish independence ahead of a referendum later this year (14).
The James Bond star, who was born in Scotland but now lives in the Bahamas, admits the decision should be made by those who live and work in the country, but brands the chance to leave the United Kingdom an opportunity "too good to miss".
In an article to be published in the New Statesman on Tuesday (04Mar14), the Hollywood legend also suggests Scottish independence may boost the country's entertainment industry by drawing more international attention to the country.
He writes, "I fully respect the choice facing Scotland in September is a matter for the people who choose to work and live there - that's only right. But as a Scot with a lifelong love of Scotland and the arts, I believe the opportunity of independence is too good to miss. Simply put there is no more creative an act than creating a new nation... A Yes vote will capture the world's attention. There will be a renewed focus on our culture and politics, giving us an unparalleled opportunity to promote our heritage and creative excellence."
The Scottish public will vote on whether or not to leave the U.K. in a referendum to be held in September (14).
