Richard Curtis - Richard Curtis' Final Film Tops British Box Office
Director Richard Curtis is bowing out on top after scoring a number one box office hit with his final romantic comedy About Time.
The Love Actually moviemaker has vowed to retire from directing following the release of his latest film, starring Rachel MCAdams and Domhnall Gleeson, which topped the U.K. box office chart over the weekend (06-08Sep13) with takings of $3.7 million (£1.8 million).
Curtis recently said of the film, "I waited a while in order to write (About Time). This probably will be the last film I will direct... It feels like a summing-up to me."
About Time saw off competition from America's current number one movie, Vin Diesel's action blockbuster Riddick, which claimed second place after bringing in $2.1 million (£1.4 million).
Pop group documentary One Direction: This Is Us scored third place with $1.7 million (£1.1 million) ahead of Jennifer Aniston's We're The Millers in fourth ($1.4 million/£918,971) and Elysium, starring Matt Damon, in fifth ($1.2 million/£776,884).
