Prisoners Opens Big, But Box Office Is Down

The Warner Bros. drama Prisoners, starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal got the 2013-2014 season off to a solid start over the weekend with $20.8 million (somewhat lower than Sunday's studio estimate of $21.4 million), but the box-office as a whole failed to match last year's results for the comparable weekend when three films opened above the $10-million mark, and a fourth, Disney's 3D re-release of Finding Nemo, took in $9.6 million in its second week. This year, the only other new film to open wide, Sony's 3D Battle of the Year, brought in just $4.6 million. Making the top-ten list was the classic Wizard of Oz, which raked in $3.1 million despite playing on just 318 IMAX screen. Its per-screen average of $9,730 topped that of every other film in national release. (The No. 1 film, Prisoners, averaged $6,386.) Playing in just four theaters, Fox Searchlight's Enough Said, starring the late James Gandolfini, packed 'em in with $232,800 -- or an average of $58,200 per theater. And Ron Howard's Rush also made an impressive debut in five theaters with $187,289 -- or $37,458 per theater.
