The Pogues - Pogues guitarist Philip Chevron dies aged 56

The Pogues guitarist Philip Chevron has died aged 56.

The 'Fairytale of New York' hitmaker lost his battle to cancer on Tuesday (08.10.13) after being diagnosed with an inoperable tumour in August 2012.

A statement read on the band's website: ''After a long illness Philip passed away peacefully this morning. We all send our sincere condolences to his family.''

The Irish musician was first treated for head and neck cancer in 2007 and given a clean bill of health in April 2012 before the fatal tumour appeared.

Chevron joined The Pogues, fronted by Shane MacGowan, following the release of their 1984 debut album, 'Red Roses for Me'.

He left the folk-punk band in 1994 following after struggling with drug and alcohol issues and reformed punk act The Radiators From Space with former Pogues bassist Cait O'Riordan during the break.

Tributes have come flooding in for the late guitarist on Twitter with many fans and musicians expressing their sadness at his passing.

Paul McCloone, lead singer from The Undertones, wrote: ''Sincere condolences to the family and many friends of Philip Chevron. A fine musician and a great songwriter. RIP.''

Thin Lizzy and Black Star Riders rocker Ricky Watwick commented: ''Very sad to hear of the passing of the great Phil Chevron today.''
