Pet Shop Boys - Pet Shops Boys To Call For Pardons At Proms Show

The Pet Shop Boys will mark their upcoming performance at classical music spectacular The Proms by calling for an official pardon for men who were imprisoned before homosexuality was legalised in the U.K.

The West End Girls hitmakers are to unveil their orchestral work A Man From The Future on 23 July (14) as part of the prestigious, eight-week long event in London.

One track, called The Pardon, tells the story of Alan Turing, who was posthumously pardoned over his 1952 conviction for gross indecency because he was in a relationship with a teenage male.

The pop duo is planning to use the platform at The Proms to call for similar pardons to be issued to thousands of other gay men who were arrested over their sexuality before British law changed in 1967.

Singer Neil Tennant says, "So very many lives were ruined over such a long period. Frankly it rather disappoints me that (gay rights pressure group) Stonewall has not done more. So we're making the statement ourselves."

Moogfest 2014 Gets To The Heart Of Electronic Music With Shows From Kraftwerk And Pet Shop Boys 4163752 News

MoogFest 2014

Named after America's main pioneer in the world of electronic music, Robert Moog, Moogfest is finally back after a brief sabbatical which saw them miss 2013 - to much disappointment from electronic lovers everywhere.

The much-adored Moog synthesizer is an incredible piece of equipment invented by a man who changed music for the better, so the fact that there's a weekend event named sharing the name is a thrilling prospect for musicians and fans alike. It began in 2004 and was eventually brought to Asheville, North Carolina in 2008 where it has stayed ever since. Not only have festival goers got a first-class music line-up to look forward to, Moogfest 2014 will also be hosting presentations during the day from both veteran music boffins to newcomers still experimenting with developing their sound. For all you synth-lovers out there, you will also be treated to various workshops which will no doubt give you an immersive experience into the heart of electronic music.

Moogfest begins on Wednesday (April 23rd) with Flying Lotus, El-P and 80s pop duo Pet Shop Boys at the top of everyone's agenda. Dan Deacon, Tiga, Black Dice and German legends Kraftwerk follow on Thursday, which is set to be one of the most exciting days of the whole five days, with daytime speakers including Deerhunter's Bradford Cox, Bob Moog's former collaborator David Borden and, of course, chart sensation Janelle Monae.

Friday brings more musical treats in the form of Dillon Francis, Lapalux, Riff Raff and Moderat for our nightly performance and LA producer Daedelus, DFA Records' Gavin Russom and Italian synth pioneer Giorgio Moroder. Saturday gets even wilder with performances from CHIC feat. Nile Rodgers, Factory Floor, M.I.A and Zed's Dead and further talks from Google's digital media artist Aaron Koblin, New York poet Saul Williams and Philly DJ King Britt.

As for Sunday, things get a little calmer with High Klassified, Just Blaze, Nick Catchdubs, Salva, Sammy Bananas and Treasure Fingers making up the nighttime performers and some more exciting presentations from 'Futurama' writers David X Cohen and Jeff Westbrook, and British sci-fi author Simon Singh.

For such an independent festival seemingly aimed at only the most serious of music lovers, the line-up is remarkable; you'll find plenty of established musicians throughout the event, and for those new to the business, it's nothing short of an amazing opportunity.

Yorkshire music festival Bingley Music Live may just have secured the festival coup of 2014. The 16,000 capacity, 3 day festival in Yorkshire has added the legendary music duo Pet Shop Boys, who have sold over 50 million records worldwide, as one of their headliners this summer.

Headlining the other nights will be chart topping hip-hop artist Example and Yorkshire heroes Shed Seven in their home county as they approach their 25th anniversary. While three times Brit Award winning Gaz Coombes of Supergrass will be appearing as a Special Guest.

This year, Bingley Music Live has artists from every genre and promises the most complete lineup in its history.

Other highlights include Gorgon City and MNEK (fresh from their joint top five smash 'Ready For Your Love'), the phenomenal Naughty Boy and festival favourites Simon and Oscar from Ocean Colour Scene.

Fast rising Singer songwriters Chloe Howl and John Lennon McCullagh will join the lineup. Chloe was nominated in the BBC Sound of 2014 and Brit Awards Critics Choice, while John was signed to the new 359 Music label by Alan McGee, the man responsible for Oasis and 2013 headliners Primal Scream.

The Pet Shop Boys are the most successful UK electronic act and duo of all time, with a career spanning over 30 years. They have clocked up no less than 42 Top 30 singles and 22 Top 10 UK singles hits.

The six times Grammy nominees have won three Brit Awards, including the 2009 award for outstanding Contribution to Music Award. The Ivor Novello Outstanding Contribution to Pop Music and the 2013 Q Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music are just two more of the band's many accolades.

Pet Shop Boys New Album 'Electric' Taking On Jay-Z & Robin Thicke 3767302 News

After its release on 12th July, Pet Shop Boys' new album Electric climbed the charts due to rave reviews and fan excitement. Since their formation in 1981, the Boys have earned notoriety with their weird stage appearances involving robot and animal masks as well as entertaining with spectacular light shows to accompany their distinctive electropop with hits such as 'West End Girls' being performed at the London 2012 Olympic closing ceremony.

If Electric gets to No.1, it will be the first time Pet Shop Boys have conquered the UK charts since 1993 with their Very LP. The album is the first not to be produced by record label Parlophone, having entered into a new management agreement with Kobalt Label Services in a move that the band described as "exciting." Tracks for Electric were recorded with producer Stuart Price, with the band's aim to make a clear "dance record" in response to the reflective mood of 11th album Elysium.

The New Record Is Dancier Than Other Recent Work.

Speaking to The Telegraph, Neil Tennant said "'Electric' is very much set on the dance floor. Our latest album often evolves as a response to our previous album and, whereas 'Elysium' had a reflective mood, 'Electric' is pretty banging! And working with Stuart Price on a studio album is something we have wanted to do for a very long time".

New Label, New Album, New Tour - Productive Times For Pet Shop Boys 3636753 News

Pet Shop Boys have announced a release date for a new album and have also revealed that it will be released on a new label that they have embarked upon, in association with Kobalt Label Services. The duo’s new album will be entitled Electric and will be released on the new label x2 on July 15 2013. Electric will feature eight new tracks (including one with Example on guest vocals) and – perhaps an unexpected choice - a cover of Bruce Springsteen’ The Last To Die. They’ll be touring South America in May to promote the album, before returning to the UK in July.

Produced by Stuart Price, the first track form the album, ‘Axis’ is available to stream already on YouTube, Music Week report. In a statement, the band said “Electric is very much set on the dance floor. Our latest album often evolves as a response to our previous album and, whereas Elysium had a reflective mood, Electric is pretty banging! And working with Stuart Price on a studio album is something we have wanted to do for a very long time.”

It's A Sin: Pet Shop Boys Leave Parlophone After 28 Years 3555248 News

Pet Shop Boys have ended their long association with mainstream label Parlophone, choosing to release their new album 'Electric' through the independent music publisher Kobalt. The duo - David Tennant and Chris Lowe - announced the news on Thursday, saying further details on their 12th studio album would be released soon.

It's a surprising news from the Brighton electronic outfit, whose 1980's hits include West End Girls and It's A Sin. They sold 50 million records worldwide on Parlophone during a 28 year career. The record label was one of EMI's prized assets, though it was sold last year to satisfy European regulators over its Vivendi's Universal Music Group's $1.8 billion purchase of EMI's recorded music business.

The Pet Shop Boys said they had enjoyed a long and successful relationship with Parlophone, "However it is also exciting now to commence a new phase working with a new team in a new business  structure and we look forward to a creative and equally fulfilling relationship with Kobalt," Neil Tennant and Lowe added in a statement.

The duo will be working with Willard Ahdritz at their new home, the Swedish businessman who set up the music publisher in 2000. Ahdritz developed a new publishing model to release and market albums while giving musicians greater control, flexibility and ownership of their work. Kobalt's first album release was 'Push The Sky Away' by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. It debuted at No.1 in seven countries and in the tour four in 13 other countries.

Pet Shop Boys - Ultimate Pet Shop Boys 2049057 Reviews

The quality of The Pet Shop Boys' best moments in unquestionable. Having cottoned on to the potential of dance music fairly early, they reinvigorated British pop with a string of flamboyant singles which counter-intuitively combined gaudy keyboard riffs with pained, sometimes maudlin vocals and lyrics. What can be called into question, however, is the necessity of yet another compilation of their better moments, especially one as lacklustre as Ultimate Pet Shop Boys.

The standard edition of this album collects some, but by no means all, of the band's best moments in chronological order. Most of the biggest hits are here: 'West End Girls', 'Heart', 'Suburbia', 'It's A Sin', and so on. Children of the eighties who grew up singing along to Neil Tennant's tales of small-town boredom and doomed romance will get a cheap thrill from hearing so many stellar pop songs back-to-back. There are many iconic moments here, from the dogs barking at the start of 'Suburbia' to the euphoric keyboard riff which punctuates Tennant's rueful and romantic vocal performance during their cover of 'Always On My Mind'. However, there also iconic moments missing. The standard edition Ultimate Pet Shop Boys does not include 'Rent', or 'A Red Letter Day', or 'Opportunities (Let's Make Lots Of Money)', or a number of their other better-known songs. It's difficult to understand why. If songs like 'A Red Letter Day' have been excluded because this compilation is meant to be a streamlined collection of their biggest hits, then why have weaker and relatively obscure later songs like 'New York City Boy', 'Miracles', and the new single 'Together' been included? If the reason for including these songs at the expense of their earlier material is to give a broad overview of their career, then why do superior later tracks like 'You Only Tell Me You Love Me When You're Drunk' not make an appearance? If 'Rent' has been excluded on the basis that it's not as good as any of the songs here, then I'd venture to suggest that whichever Parlophone administrative assistant made the decision invest in some cotton buds.

The special edition of Ultimate Pet Shop Boys solves some of the standard edition's problems by including a surprisingly thorough DVD overview of their career. The DVD includes a host of television performances (including versions of all the missing songs mentioned above) and their extravagant set at Glastonbury 2010. It will surely be this compilation's main selling point. There is little point in investing in the standard edition when better 'Best Of' collections, such as the 2003 release Pop Art, are available. However, fans of the band who want a record of their live performances should consider buying the deluxe package just for the DVD. They could always use the CD as a coaster.

Pet Shop Boys
Integral
Video

Pet Shop Boys signal the release of their new album 'Disco 4' with a groundbreaking video for the single, 'Integral'. Picking up on the song's theme of ID cards and the erosion of our civil liberties by government, new creative group the Rumpus Room has conceived and created a sinister mix of surveillance type footage and information technology. Embedded in this dystopian film are single frames of QR Code ( a new Bar Code technology - QR stands for Quick Response - that is readable by the camera in your mobile phone ): pause the video on the QR Code 'frame', take a 'snapshot' with your mobile and the camera 'reads' the QR Code ( in the same way scanners at a supermarket checkout read your shopping items ).

Once your mobile has 'read' the QR Codes in the video your mobile will have a link to various sites chosen by Pet Shop Boys that are highlighting campaigns for freedom and civil liberty.

There are two versions of the 'Integral' video available - the first is a low resolution 'graphic' version optimized for portable devices (mobile phones, PDA's etc.,) the second a higher resolution for traditional broadcast needs. Both versions successfully mix the 'fluid' technology of the internet ('links' etc.,), the new way we consume film and video ('pause', 'rewind' etc.,) and the new tools ( 'QR Codes', camera-phones etc.,) that we can use to read/encode our environment.

Disco 4 is released on October 8 2007.
