Pacific Rim Edges Out The Smurfs Overseas

In a surprise, Warner Bros.' Pacific Rim turned out to be the top performer overseas, beating out the favorite, Sony's The Smurfs 2 by a tiny margin. Thanks to a record-breaking debut in China, Pacific raked in $53 million, bringing its foreign total past the $200-million mark and edging out Smurfs $52.5 million. In 2011, the original The Smurfs occupied the top position at the international box office for eight weeks. In its second week overseas, The Wolverine brought in $38.5 million raising its gross $255.3 million and placing third. Despicable Me 2 displayed continued staying power as it collected $13.8 million, bringing its foreign gross to $387 million and its worldwide gross to $713.7 million. Rounding out the top five overseas was Universal's Fast and Furious 6, which tallied $8.8 million in its twelfth week. Its foreign take now stands at $533 million and its worldwide take at $771.1 million.
