Movie Reviews: Diana

Diana, a film about the late princess starring Naomi Watts in the title role, premiered Thursday night in London and was greeted with hoots by film critics. Peter Bradshaw in The Guardian likened it to a horrendous Fifty Shades of Grey with the S&M sex taken out. Australian critic Kate Muir in the nationally distributed The Australian, described the script as squirmingly embarrassing ... atrocious and intrusive. The Daily Mail's Christopher Tookey commented that the film is not so tacky or sensationalist as one might fear -- just slow and terribly, terribly dull. David Edwards in The Mirror calls it cheap and cheerless ... a film nobody would bother going to see if it weren't for the famous characters. In the Telegraph, David Gritten isn't quite so disparaging but asks, What's the point of Diana? It's hardly fascinating. It doesn't offer new facts about the Princess's life. And it certainly doesn't explain her complexity or contradictions. That would take a different, better film altogether. But Geoffrey McNab in the London Independent allows that Diana works well enough as a dark romantic drama and is far less exploitative than it might have been.
