Martin Margiela - Maison Martin Margiela defend Kanye West collaboration

Maison Martin Margiela weren't fazed by Kanye West's controversial reputation.

After announcing they were supplying all the looks for the rapper's 'Yeezus' tour last month, the Paris-based fashion house have revealed the reason behind their bespoke collection for the Grammy Award-winning artist.

Despite Kanye's outspoken nature, the company jumped at the chance to collaborate with the 36-year-old star due to their mutual respect for one another's work.

A spokesperson for Margiela told Vogue magazine: ''We have wanted to work with Kanye West for a very long time, ever since he became a close friend of the Maison; supporting us a lot and coming to our shows. We like his music and the vision he had for the tour.

''We didn't pay attention to what is being said about him in the press, we just focused on what could be done with him.''

Although the brand was given no specific brief to work from, they were told the looks - consisting of 10 couture pieces, 20 ready-to-wear pieces and a pair of trainers - had to be in keeping with designer Vanessa Beecroft's artistic direction for the tour.

They also worked personally with the 'N****s in Paris' rapper - who recently got engaged to reality TV star Kim Kardashian - to conceptualise and create final designs.

The Margiela spokesperson continued: ''Everything went very smoothly since our first meetings with Kanye at the beginning of the year. Firstly we went through the Maison's archives, finding iconic pieces to be reinterpreted.

''We then had a few fittings, bouncing ideas back and forth about how to adapt the garments, the fabrics, textures, colours and details, to transform them into a stage wardrobe. Making the pieces in our Parisian atelier allowed us to create pieces without any limits.''

The most notable pieces of the collection are four embellished masks - a staple of every Maison Martin Margiela catwalk - which appear to obstruct the rapper's vision during his performance, however, the fashion house has confirmed this is not the case.

They said: ''The base of the masks is made of black silk gauze, a transparent material that allows models to see through it. It's essential that this transparent material be in black and not white, because white becomes opaque.''
