Lucas Says He's Indebted To Star Trek Creator Roddenberry
George Lucas has acknowledged his debt to Gene Roddenberry and the creators of the original Star Trek TV series in making his original Star Wars possible. In a documentary titled Trek Nation, produced by Roddenberry's son Rod, Lucas says, Star Trek softened up the entertainment arena so that Star Wars could come along and stand on its shoulders. The TV series, said Lucas in the interview, part of which is posted on the Los Angeles Times's Hero Complex website, produced an effective group of people in the beginning who accepted [the Star Wars premise], that it wasn't that far out. To the studios it was way far out. Lucas indicated that when he first approached studio executives the reaction was, What is this? However, he observed, There was a fan base out there. The fan base was primarily the Star Trek fan base, who understood science fiction, who understood visual science fiction and was ready for something like this to be in the feature arena.
