Orange Is The New Black - Laverne Cox Recalls Childhood Bullying
Orange Is The New Black star Laverne Cox has awful memories of her upbringing in Alabama, revealing she was constantly bullied by classmates for her transgender beliefs.
The actress admits had to endure physical assaults and homophobic slurs from kids in her school.
Cox kept the bullying to herself, because she feared she would get in trouble with her mother for not fighting back.
She tells Vibe Vixen, "When I grew up in Alabama, I was called a sissy, a f** and kids basically wanted to beat me up every day.
"There was a time in middle school when some kids hit my brother and (me) with drum sticks and a parent from the school saw it. We knew we could never tell our mother because she would blame us and question why we weren't fighting back, but the principal called her. It was really awful and painful."
