Kevin Spacey - Kevin Spacey's Doomsday Warning To Tv Bosses
Oscar winner Kevin Spacey has warned Tv bosses the industry will collapse unless they are willing to move with the times and give viewers the freedom to watch shows whenever they want.
The American Beauty star took to the stage at the Edinburgh International Television Festival in Scotland on Thursday (22Aug13) to deliver the event's keynote speech, and he made an impassioned and forceful plea for studio bosses to act quickly to avoid a catastrophe.
Delivering the MACTaggart Lecture at the event, Spacey confessed he fears Tv will mirror the music industry and suffer devastating financial losses unless chiefs adapt to the marketplace.
He told delegates, "The audience wants the control, they want freedom... Studios and networks who ignore either shift - whether the increasing sophistication of storytelling, or the constantly shifting sands of technological advancement - will be left behind. And if they fail to hear these warnings, audiences will evolve faster than they will.
"(The audience) will seek the stories and content-providers who give them what they demand: complex, smart stories available whenever they want, on whatever device they want... Netflix and other similar services have succeeded because they have married good content with a forward-thinking approach to viewing habits and appetites...
"Give people what they want, when they want it, in the form they want it, at a reasonable price, and they'll more than likely pay for it rather than steal it."
