Kerry Washington - Kerry Washington has 'fatal' food allergies

Picture:

Kerry Washington suffers from ''fatal food allergies''.

The Emmy Award-nominated actress has severe reactions to certain foods and must travel at all times with an EpiPen, a syringe containing epinephrine, which is used to treat allergic reactions.

She revealed to E! News: ''Most people do not know about this but I carry an EpiPen with me almost everywhere I go because I have a lot of food allergies, like fatal food allergies, that if I eat these things, I could wind up dying in an emergency room somewhere. So I always have an EpiPen. It's not sexy, but I'm being honest, I have an EpiPen in my bag.''

The 36-year-old beauty has become a household name since starring on hit TV drama 'Scandal', however, the actress - who secretly wed her football player beau Nnamdi Asomugha in June - insists she is nothing like her character, Olivia Pope, a political fixer who is tasked with handling major scandals in Washington, DC.

She said: ''There is no Olivia Pope in Kerry Washington. I'm never bossy, I never suggest that people should do what I say they should do, I never think I can fix situations, I never try to take care of people and I never only keep situations to myself privately ... that's why everyone knows about my private life!''

As a public figure I feel like Kerry Washington has an opportunity to raise awareness about deadly food allergies. I wish that she hadn't said: "It's not sexy, but I'm being honest, I have an EpiPen in my bag.'' She makes it sound shameful in a way. It's not at all...it just is. She could make it cool! And I wish she would for all the young children, (including my son), who are struggling with these allergies. Carry your epipen with pride! Bedazzle a carrying case! She is in a unique position to help remove the stigma of these allergies and to bring awareness to the real danger they present. Thank you, Samantha Duckworth
