Kathy Bates - Kathy Bates' Life Back On Track After American Horror Story
Kathy Bates has credited her role in American Horror Story: Coven with giving her a new lease of life following her double mastectomy last year (12).
The Misery star plays evil slave owner Madame LaLaurie in the latest season of Ryan Murphy's scary series, which marks her first time back on the small screen since her cancer battle and the cancellation of her legal drama Harry's Law.
Bates admits she was at a low point after a terrible 2012 and was unsure of signing on to the show, but insists that shooting the series in New Orleans, Louisiana has given her health and self-esteem a much-needed boost.
She tells The Huffington Post, "Sometime after (speaking to Lange about the show) I had a double mastectomy and so I was really still reeling and healing from that when I was having my meeting with Ryan.
"I wasn't really sure where to put my foot next in the business. I was so excited after that first meeting, I thought, 'There is life after all.'"
After finding a treatment centre near the show's set to deal with the after effects of her traumatic operation, Bates is considering undergoing breast reconstruction for the first time.
She adds, "I discovered that here in New Orleans, I'm not only enjoying doing the show down here, but I found a wonderful place to go - I need to have treatment on my arm because of lymphedema - and there's a wonderful place here called the Center for Breast Reconstruction, which I've just discovered, and now I'm contemplating reconstruction for the first time since my surgery.
"I feel like I've just landed in clover, not only with the show, but for my own health. That's a great feeling. As my niece said: 'Lost in the right direction.'"
