John Cusack - John Cusack Speaks Out Against Government Surveillance In Psa

Hollywood stars including John Cusack, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Oliver Stone are speaking out against the National Security Agency's (Nsa) surveillance of American citizens in a new public service announcement.

Former Central Intelligence Agency (Cia) worker and Nsa contractor Edward Snowden has been on the run since he admitted to leaking confidential documents detailing huge surveillance operations undertaken by officials the U.S. and U.K. against their own people.

Appearing alongside academics, lawyers, and former whistleblowers, the actors demand an end to the mass surveillance of American citizens.

The video comes in the run-up to the Stop Watching Us: Rally Against Mass Surveillance in Washington, D.C. on Saturday (26Oct13).

The clip draws comparisons between modern day surveillance and the scandal surrounding former President Richard Nixon, who kept tabs on political rivals and members of the press.

Cusack says, "It was wrong then, and it's wrong now... The tools for surveillance have never been powerful and the threat to our civil liberties have never been greater... In the surveillance state, democracy itself is dead."

Gyllenhaal closes the clip saying, "We need to end mass, suspicion-less surveillance."
