Jeremy Clarkson - Jeremy Clarkson's Burma Slur Broke Watchdog Rules

Jeremy Clarkson's offensive joke during an episode of hit motoring show Top Gear broke Tv regulations, officials at British broadcasting watchdog Ofcom have ruled.

Co-host Clarkson offended some viewers during the Top Gear: Burma Special programme, broadcast earlier this year (14), when he looked at a bridge they had built over the River Kwai and said, "That is a proud moment, but there's a slope on it," as a man crossed the walkway.

The controversial remark, considered a racial slur towards Asians, sparked an investigation by the media regulator, and staff have now ruled the comment breached broadcasting standards.

An Ofcom spokesperson says, "After a thorough investigation, Ofcom has found the Bbc breached broadcasting rules by including an offensive racial term in Top Gear, which was not justified by context.

"Jeremy Clarkson used the word 'slope' to refer both to an Asian man crossing a bridge, and the incline of the bridge... This was scripted in advance. The Bbc failed to take the opportunity, either during filming or post-production, to check whether the word had the potential to offend viewers."
