James Blake - James Blake wins Barclaycard Mercury Prize 2013

James Blake has won the Barclaycard Mercury Prize 2013.

The 25-year-old star was delighted to receive recognition for his second album 'Overgrown' - which was released in April this year and reached number eight in the UK chart - and was awarded a cash prize of £20,000 and a trophy at a ceremony that was held at the Roundhouse in Camden, north London.

In his acceptance speech James said: ''This is the first award I've ever won, apart from a tennis trophy I won when I was 12.''

Judges were extremely impressed with his work applauding his efforts.

They said: ''[It was] Inventive, poetic and poignant ... James Blake makes music like no-one else.''

The young singer also fought off competition from the favourite, Laura Mvula, and beat David Bowie and the Arctic Monkeys to the top spot.

This year's 12 nominees were chosen out of a list of over 220 artists and newcomers Rudimental, Disclosure and Jake Bugg were also in the line up for the award.

The Official Charts Company has revealed that these three acts have benefited just from being nominated. They are said to have sold over 23,000 copies of each of their albums since the nominations were announced last month.

The singer-songwriter was previously also nominated for the prize in 2011, for his self-titled debut album.
