Foxcatcher Director Apprehensive Over Steve Carell Casting

Director Bennett Miller admits he was hesitant to cast funnyman Steve Carell in upcoming psychological thriller Foxcatcher.

The actor has earned acclaim for his roles in hit comedies including The 40-Year-Old Virgin and U.S. Tv series The Office, but he's set to surprise fans with his portrayal of convicted murderer John Eleuthere du Pont in an adaptation of U.S. Olympic gold medallist Mark Schultz's autobiography.

Foxcatcher made its debut at the Cannes International Film Festival on Monday (19May14), with critics heaping praise on Carell's performance, but director Miller confessed during a press conference that he was unsure how the star would handle such an intense role.

He admitted, "It was so far outside of his comfort zone. I've never seen Steve do anything that would give any material evidence that he could do this. We just chatted and I heard how he thought and was thinking about the character, and I had a vision for it working. I saw him go to a dark place."

Foxcatcher is slated to hit cinemas on 14 November (14). The film centres on Schultz, played by Channing Tatum, who is taken in by Carell's du Pont to train for the 1988 Olympics.
