Dr. Phil - Dr Phil Under Fire For Controversy Tweet
TV psychologist Dr. Phil McGraw has accidentally caused controversy by asking his Twitter followers whether or not it's acceptable to have sex with a drunk woman.
Dr. Phil McGraw has come under fire for a tweet about drunk sex.
The TV personality sparked outrage by canvassing his Twitter followers to ask whether it was considered acceptable to have intercourse with an intoxicated woman.
Shortly before the message was deleted, a petition was started on Change.org, with creator Carmen Reid calling for an apology and a special episode of the psychologist's show to be dedicated to rape-awareness. The petition has gathered over 1,000 signatures so far.
The offending tweet read: ''If a girl is drunk, is it okay to have sex with her? Reply yes or no to @drphil #teensaccused''.
A representative for Dr. Phil was quick to respond, claiming it was meant to be a poll question for research purposes, and it was neither a joke nor a personal post.
The spokesman said: ''This Tweet was intended to evoke discussion leading into a very serious show topic. It was not intended to be taken lightly.''
The public have responded by showing their fury on Twitter, with one outraged social media user fuming, ''Is it okay to punch Dr.Phil hard in the junk if he asks whether raping someone is okay? #DrPhilQuestions. (sic)''
