DMX has been declared bankrupt.

The rapper - real name Earl Simmons - filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Monday (29.07.13) after listing less than $50,000 in assets and allegedly failing to pay $1.24 million in child support and more than $21,000 on a car lease, among other obligations, according to the Wall Street Journal newspaper.

Domenick Nati, representative for the star, said in a statement: ''DMX's financial strains have been inhibiting his career for several years. Poor financial management by prior representation have caused him to be ineligible to retain a passport.

''The purpose of this bankruptcy filing is for reorganisation so he can perform for his fans oversees. We are currently planning a tour in Europe and Africa for the fall of 2013.''

The 'Party Up (Up in Here)' hitmaker was arrested last week in South Carolina on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI) and driving without a licence.

However, a spokesman claimed he was never charged as he passed the breathalyser test and was swiftly released after posting $1,235 in bail.

Since rising to fame in 1996, DMX has been arrested on multiple occasions for offences including; animal cruelty, reckless driving, drug possession, aggravated assault and identity falsification.
